Ontario-based Durham Furniture Celebrates 125th Anniversary

This country’s oldest furniture producer, Durham Furniture, is celebrating its 125th year in business.

“We are incredibly proud to reach this significant milestone,” says president and CEO Luke Simpson. “This achievement is a testament to the hard work, creativity and passion of our talented team, as well as the enduring support of our loyal customers and partners. As we celebrate, we remain committed to our founding principles of excellence and craftsmanship.”

Opened in 1899 in Durham, Ont., Durham Furniture began as a community initiative to provide employment for the town’s young people with a vision to create timeless, high-quality furniture. Since then, the company has grown into a North American renowned brand, recognized for the classic design aesthetic of its furniture that is still manufactured in the same red-brick factory built more than 100 years ago. Product offerings include traditional, transitional and contemporary pieces. All are made from sustainably harvested solid wood.

To commemorate this anniversary, Durham Furniture held a Thanksgiving luncheon for its entire staff during which management expressed gratitude for the team that has helped shape the company’s success. Many workers represent multiple generations, underscoring the close-knit, family-oriented nature of the business that employs more than 150 craftspeople.

The manufacturer intends to host a series of other events and promotions throughout the remainder of the year, including a ribbon-cutting ceremony at High Point Market on Oct. 25, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in its showroom at 204, in the 220 Elm building.

“We are excited to share this journey with our community and customers,” says Simpson. “As we look ahead, we are energized by the possibilities and opportunities, while staying true to the values that have guided us for the past 125 years.”
