Prepac Manufacturing Closing North Carolina Plant

Just one year after moving furniture production out of Canada, Prepac Manufacturing is closing its Whitsett, N.C., plant.

The 260,000-square-foot facility was lauded as an American manufacturing success story as recently as last year. Some Republican leaders credited President Trump’s tariff policies for the plant’s 2025 expansion — a move that cost 170 workers in British Columbia their jobs.

The Canadian-owned maker of ready-to-assemble furniture cited high domestic production costs and “continued influx of low-cost Chinese imports” as reasons for the closure.

The Whitsett plant serves Guilford County, part of the greater Greensboro metropolitan area. It opened in 2021 to serve as the company’s main hub for manufacturing, warehousing and distribution.

Approximately 200 workers will be permanently laid off as of May 2.
