LFL Group’s Q1 Financial Results Surpass Forecasts

Aggressive promotions, having a strong in-stock position and the exit of a key Ontario competitor were all cited as contributing factors in LFL Group‘s better than expected first quarter uptick in both revenues and earnings.

The publicly held parent of Leon’s and The Brick reported system-wide sales were $677.7 million, an 8.3 per cent increase over the $625.6 million rung-up during the first three months of 2023.

Corporate store sales were $562.3 million, up 9.6 per cent from the comparable period’s $513 million, as same store sales climbed nine per cent.

“The improvement was driven by strong growth in the furniture and appliance categories, which were supported by strong inventory positions and effective promotions,” management said in their report to shareholders.

Meanwhile, sales by LFL’s 101-unit franchise network rose 2.5 per cent to $115.4 million, from $112.6 million.

Adjusted net income for the period was $16.4 million or 24 cents per share, up from $12.9 million or 19 cents per share — an increase of 26.3 per cent on a per share basis.

“Our success at retail during the quarter was a direct result of the strategic decisions we made over a year ago to position the company for a value-focused environment,” LFL Group president and CEO Mike Walsh said in a statement.

“This further validates our consistent strategy to concentrate on driving higher returns on our existing assets through four-wall execution, omnichannel and ancillary businesses, while only growing square footage where it truly makes sense to do so,” he continued. “With unmatched scale in our sector across omnichannel and distribution, underpinned by a rock-solid balance sheet with $374 million in unrestricted liquidity, LFL is positioned to continue gaining market share and driving results for shareholders.”

At the end of March, LFL operated a total of 302 stores across the country under the following banners: Leon’s, The Brick, Appliance Canada, The Brick Mattress Store and Brick Outlet. It closed one Brick Mattress Store during the first quarter.

It also operates six websites: leons.ca, thebrick.com, furniture.ca, midnorthern.com, transglobalservice.com and appliancecanada.com.
