Ikea Canada Achieves Sustainable Delivery Milestone
Home furnishings retailer Ikea Canada has reached a significant zero-emission milestone as electric vehicle (EV) truck home deliveries have taken the lead over diesel.
In August, 72 per cent of its oversized home deliveries were completed using EVs, surpassing those made by internal combustion engine vehicles for the first time.
This marks a strong step forward in support of Ingka Group’s global ambition to achieve more than 90 per cent zero-emission home deliveries by 2028.
The company says the achievement was made possible through collaboration with its service partners and a nationwide rollout of fleet chargers.
“Our investments in EV charging infrastructure provide our delivery service partners with dedicated, reliable and safe access to power, ensuring they start each day fully charged and ready to deliver,” says Liz Wilson, head of customer fulfillment at Ikea Canada.
Ikea Canada has invested $3.75 million, supported by $1.175 million in funding from Natural Resources Canada’s Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program and utility partners, to have EV fleet chargers installed at all 17 Ikea home delivery fulfillment units across the country. This coast-to-coast rollout ensures every location offering home delivery services, including Ikea stores and customer distribution centres (CDCs), is equipped with dedicated EV charging infrastructure for its delivery partners.
Ikea Canada is part of Ingka Group, which operates 574 Ikea stores, shops and planning studios in 31 countries, including 16 in Canada. Last year, Ikea Canada welcomed 32.6 million visitors to its stores and 162.6 million visitors to its website.
